I have the honour to acknowledge the re-

ceipt of your Confidential Despatch of the 26th. ultimo on

the subject of the engagement of Chinese coolies for labour

in the Transvaal Gold Mines.

I am strongly in favour of the proposals

made in Lord Milner's telegram of the 23rd. of February, 1904,

No. 2.

Perry is at present in the Colony and

has for some time past heen in communication with me on the

subject of acquiring a site for a Depot for coolies in connec-

tion with this scheme of emigration.

I see no difficulty in providing for the

appointment of any Baigration Agent the Transvaal Government

may appoint as Emigration Officer of this Government for pur-

roses of emigration to the Transvaal. I should mention that I

have not received the telegram of the 26th. of February to

which you refer in your Despatch.
